Windows 7 has Pen and Touch Capabilities built in, which is awesome unless you want to actually draw something with your wacom or similar device in Photoshop, Illustrator, CAD etc. The problem is that a lot of the pen tablet drivers conflict with the Windows 7 pen / tablet-pc functionality. The best solution I have found is to disable the Windows 7 “Tablet PC Input Service” and then everything works without a lag.
Please note this method will disable native functionality related to this service (like “press and hold for right click”), but if you are reading this article you probably want to get rid of it anyway. I also recommend creating a system restore point. It is however unlikely anything will go wrong unless one disables the wrong service.
Lastly I take no responsibility if anything goes wrong I am just supplying the steps I took to rectify the problem 🙂
That being said here we go:
Click on the Start button then click on Control Panel
Click System And Security on the top left hand corner of your Control Panel
Click Administrative Tools
In the Services window, scrolls down to Tablet PC Input Services and double click it
In the properties window that opens, click the Stop button
Change the Startup type to Disabled
Click the OK button
Restart your design applications or preferably reboot.
And that is all there is to it! If you wish to re-enable this service repeat the process and change the startup type “Automatic” and click “Start” then “OK” and it will be re-enabled
Thanks for reading! 🙂
